About this place
Along the main thoroughfare of Akatsuka-Shinmachi in Itabashi Ward, Funase draws diners with its generous combination sets pairing ramen with half-orders of fried rice. The quintessential shoyu ramen set features springy, medium-thick curly noodles swimming in a mellow soy sauce broth free of harsh edges, topped with tender braised pork shoulder chashu and a soft-boiled seasoned egg. Alternating between slurps of the soup-slicked noodles and bites of the freshly wok-tossed fried rice reveals an appetizing balance, the fluffy, separated grains carrying a savory aroma backed by bits of pork, egg, and scallion.
The noodle selection extends beyond standard soy sauce to include salt and miso broths, as well as hearty vegetable or bean sprout ramen where the flavors of cooked toppings meld straight into the soup—each available with a half-portion of fried rice. Pan-fried gyoza accented with garlic and Chinese chives and a beer set served with roast pork and seasoned egg cater equally well to those dropping by for a casual drink. Counter seating makes dining solo straightforward, and payment is cash only.
